CMOP Membership Categories

Community Media Organizing Project offers three categories of membership to organizations and individuals located in the Southeast who have a strong, demonstrated commitment to using media strategies as organizing tools for progressive, membership-based community organizations. Participation in the CMOP Advanced Training Workshop (usually held each fall) is a priority for applying for and maintaining membership. Membership is by application.

CMOP Membership Categories

I. Vested Member Organizations—Steering Committee Members Non-profit organizations in the South dedicated to progressive community organizing on the local or statewide level, with a strong interest in strategic media campaign planning and a commitment to dedicate staff time to media work. CMOP members most typically are membership-based groups or, in some instances, multi-issue, professionally-staffed long-term coalitions of membership organizations based at the local level.

II. Affiliated Community Organizations Non-profit organizations in the South dedicated to progressive community organizing on the local or statewide level, which have a strong interest in learning about or improving media work to achieve organizational goals. CMOP Affiliated Community Organizations most typically are membership-based groups or, in some instances, multi-issue, professionally-staffed long-term coalitions of membership organizations based at the local level, with a strong interest in learning about or improving media work to achieve organizational goals.

III. Associates (Individuals and Organizations)

  • Individual members of PCN who work in media activities located in the South, who have a demonstrated commitment to progressive community organizing and CMOP’s mission, as well as a clear understanding of CMOP’s training principles and workshop objectives.
  • Individuals from the South who fit PCN membership criteria but are not PCN members (i.e., individuals who spend a significant portion of time supporting communications for/with progressive grassroots organizations.) Clear understanding of CMOP is necessary, as outlined above.
  • Individual artists or cultural workers with a demonstrated commitment to progressive community organizing and CMOP’s mission, as well as a clear understanding of CMOP’s training principles and workshop objectives. Artists whose goal is to explore ways that the presentation or conduct of their work can be a vital part of an organizing or media campaign being implemented by an established, professionally staffed community organization.
  • Cultural or media organizations with a demonstrated commitment to progressive community organizing and CMOP’s mission, as well as a clear understanding of CMOP’s training principles and workshop objectives. Organizations whose goal is to explore ways that the presentation or conduct of their work can be a vital part of an organizing or media campaign being implemented by an established, professionally staffed community organization.
